Tim Main

Tim Main is an artist based in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

The belief that art is a craft based tool for the study of consciousness underpins Tim Mains practice. His works are the expression of his observations of the order and purpose in nature, and embody a desire to understand the sublime secret of creation.

Made of reclaimed oak and ceramic, these sculptures are an exploration of form and pattern. The circular constructions are a core component of Mains work, symbolising wholeness and timelessness.

The influence of folk arts straightforward worship of nature is also evident in this body of work. The Messengers, in this case the Piwakawaka Fantail and the Tuke Wren, act as condutis between the terrestrial and celestial realms.

Main has artworks in public and private collections throughout Aotearoa, including The Christchurch Art Gallery, Canterbury Museum and Wallace Art Collection.

"For me the pleasure of the aesthetic experience lies in finding a balance between a guiding structure and a variety of embellishments; a harmony of order and movement. I like the idea that we can observe the medley of forms in a plant and take from that a few expressive elements that once crafted/constructed will function as a symbol for all nature." - Tim Main
